Shift work

Upon graduation from the Police Academy all members are required to complete a one year probationary period as a general duties officer at one of our training stations in Burnie, Devonport, Hobart or Launceston.  Tasmania Police general duties officers work 24 hour rotating shift schedules and an example of the 5 week rotational roster is below.  The shifts will vary in length between 8, 9 and 10 hours.  In the case of a major incident or natural disaster as a police officer, you may be required to perform additional duties and hours.

Initially, the adjustment to shift work can take some time, especially night shift.  But, a number of officers continue to work shift work for the majority of their careers and find that, especially while their children are very young it actually allows them to see more of them than traditional 9-5 work.  If you are someone that enjoys the outdoors or dislikes getting up to an alarm 5 days a week, then shift work may just be your answer!
